Recommended Gunsmiths in New Zealand for hot bluing

    Good evening all,

I am researching who best to send my rifle barrel to for re-hot bluing in New Zealand. I was wondering if anybody here has any recommendations and/or have had any personal dealings with any particular gunsmith. And if you happen to have any photos this is a bonus! The last few inches of the rifle barrel in question has some surface pitting, so it will need refinished. I basically need a guarantee that whomever is doing the work can do an immaculate and flawless job, and happy to pay the $$$ to get the right result.

I am attempting to achieve a high gloss deep blue finish on this barrel to match the receiver finish, which is also a high gloss deep blue finish.

    Many thanks
    D

TJ is set up for rust bluing isn't he - not hot caustic bluing? Rust bluing is great, but not generally high gloss.

If you're wanting perfection, then bluing just a section of your barrel may not give you the result you want. If it was mine, I would be wanting the whole barrel and action blued as one, in the same bath, at the same temperature etc etc. That way you stand a much greater chance of the colour being uniform through the whole rifle. It may not be exactly the same colour as the original, and it very well may be. Thats the risk you as the owner must take, not the gunsmith. I take all my gun smithing to Gunworks and from memory they only start up the bluing bath 2 or 3 times per year, so there will be a wait involved.

I had my Sharps blued at 14/ diana court, along Diana drive, good job. I think he does Hardy rifles as well. All up in A K L.

Allen Carr in Paraparaumu. Top craftsman gunsmith. Has blued a few for me over the years. my BSA Majestic came out looking like Pauli's example. You won't be disappointed.
