I bought a Canon SX50 as an alternative to a dedicated spotting scope for the range. Photos taken at 50x optical and then inspected on preview as you mentioned. As it turned out 200 metres can still be a bit tricky with 6.5mm holes in the black. Quality DSLR gear should push this distance out, but there must also come a point where mirage limits any purely optical system from being usable. A TargetCam gets around this.
