    Yeah I agree with that.
I use to use two 9m snatch straps plus winch if I needed extra distance for retrieving my boat over soft sand.
Found it better just to use the snatch straps and a couple of 9ton tie downs linked up and attached to the tow bar. Jockey wheel on the boat and tow it up the beach to somewhere suitable to them hook it up to the truck.

I picked up a 9tonne 20m one from somewhere. Just remember to use decent shackles and a cost/dampener on the winch line

If not pulling much load why not downsize the cable and fit more on the drum?

Be worth while keeping am eye on this, even if just for using it as a tow rope for dragging boat up

Well that was the simplest and my first idea but I can't seem to find anything decent strength and small diameter

What I was thinking would be good was something that sits on the outside of the winch that gears it up
Like a reduction box but in reverse
Wrap the winch rope round one side and it turns a large drum

What kind of distance are we talking for the retrieve?

IV been trying to find a manual safari with a pto winch for a few months now for a fair price

At least then it won't get hot

The place for all your ropes/chains etc, handy place for the boat owner.

The problem with Dyneema is that once you have used it you come up with all sorts of other uses, the stuff is so easy to splice and make soft shackles, adjustable strops etc

I think the stuff is shit .We use all sorts of winches about a dozen times a day and still struggle with the hype of dyneema and its variants.Yes it has its uses for heli ops where weight is a concern or what it was designed for lifting delicate wind turbine blades without damage. The longest i could make some last was less than a week and another length about a hour.Wire rope is far better for most uses,Any abrasion under load dyneema is ruined and the mud and shit that gets trapped in the weave works away just nicely over time. Each to their own but plain wire for longevity and price any day.

well if this winch set up gets used more than 5 times a year It will be a bloody good year

then again if its easy Ill do it more often, the fishing spot it is for just wrecks gear like you wouldnt believe
so id just like it to be more gentle and controlled
