I'd say not dodging the molten lead

I have put a 'dry' spoon into the mix to stir and had a good 'pop' since then all tools get the blow torch before use.

I'm guessing a bit of moisture in the pot? Can imagine sweat dripping of your brow while looking over.... Have never played with molten lead myself

Thought it may have involved water.

I doubt a drop landing in the pot would do much as it would be on top of the lead, but something moist or damp inserted into the lead..... KA POW!

Nearly had one of those a few days ago casting some mine balls. Nice pot of molten lead put the dipper on the surface starts sizzling! It wasn't wet but moisture must have been on the surface (it's a little rusty) if I had plunged it in I could have well ended up like that.

    Well….
When you’re swaging lead wire,be careful your die doesn't fall out and get pressed back in sideways because if it does then your lead spurts out the bottom of your dieholder instead of through the die.
