Yet ,if you take trout out of Taupo, with..say, a spear-gun, they will confiscate your vehicle , fine you, And you may get community-service. How can morons committing Crimes with firearms, get less than this ?
Fact is that poaching is absolutely rife. What those young fellas did is terrible on so many fronts. However people all over this country are jumping fences. Sure the deer and pigs etc are 'wild' but it is still trespassing and theft and a shite load of disrespect. It gives me the proverbial. And as you say there is stuff all in the way of consequences.
Its a tough one and a mind set as well.
Also aware that it's easy to unknowingly find yourself where you possibly should not be.
Many years back late 80's early 90's I was shooting goats on scrub regrowth clearings what the maps showed as being DOC land assessed off Pirongia, Had a wellcoming committee waiting for us when we got back to the car. After showing them the Map etc they explained that they felt it was Maori family land. Ended up they gave me a name and number to call and every time I phoned to request access they always said yes.
NB. We where not bombing the place up, just taking 1 or 2 goats each.
