I agree with you @
Allizdog.
I had to go and euthanaise a young hogget in the paddock today - I didn't have access to a dog and there was no way she was going to come anywhere near me. So I chose to put a .22 bullet to her head from about 25 meters.
Unfortunately,
1/. it was a Government piece of land, and they are very jittery about firearms on their land, and
2/. it was in full sight of the public driving down a section of one of NZ' scenic routes.
I already have the Government Agency's permission for such occasions, but normally such things are carried out, out of sight of the public.
Initially I considered ringing Christchurch Police Control to alert them to what I was doing in the off chance some freaked out member of the public were to call it in.
Then I thought, why? I am doing nothing illegal. I am in the middle of the country in a paddock with sheep. I was draped in oil skins against the rain looking like a farmer, although I am not. I was in a farm vehicle. If the public could get upset with all of that, then all is lost in New Zealand.
I did the job, dumped the poor old hogget in the offal pit and have been home ever since. No SWAT teams have turned up in the last 11 hours, so I can only guess no member of the driving public or tourist was frightened by what they saw.
However, it did make me reflect that it is a sad time that we have come too in that we go about lawful, normal everyday tasks, but because their is a firearm involved we have to get all paranoid of what the public perception might be and whether armed Police will be mobilised to our location.
Things have changed irrevocably, I fear.
Cheers
Phil
