We'll only start to see change when the seriousness of the punishment outweighs the benefit of illegally obtaining and possessing firearms. In the current western political climate, things are only going to get worse.

I am beginning to think that the only way to find anything approaching the truth is to make an OIA request for every statement he makes.
Oia Requests about the lies he peddles are done fairly regularly. They always demonstrate that he's lying.

Once everyone is registered (or at least the law abiding people) straw buyers should become impossible.
Although it should already be impossible now, anyone can sell their existing firearms to a gang/criminal and there will be no way to trace it.

If the register ends up staying (which sadly seems more and more likely the longer it goes on and the more people registered) Id like to see regular reviews into if it's worth it or not.

If it turns out to have little or no effect on criminals getting hold of guns then it should be scrapped, regardless of sunk costs.

Unfortunately I don't thinkany Government department ever does a review into cost effectiveness, or review cost vs outcome. It's just grow baby grow.
The registry has already failed. Numerous people are bring told to, and forced to enter incorrect information because the correct attribute be it calibre or make, isn't available.

Not only are you forced to commit an offense but the data is tainted on entry. There is no hope of it getting anywhere near the needed accuracy to be effective.

Well, somebody needs to ask him that.

his flawed logic ("gang patches don't kill people guns kill people") is typical of "journalists" today ......
if gang patches don't kill people then guns certainly don't being another inanimate object, or if you were to believe guns kill people then the statistics would show that gang patches do in fact kill people

he's a tosser it would be good to go back to the days when we had actual reporters that reported the news rather than inflated egos pushing their own agendas .....taxpayer funded too being on tv1

Where are these straw buyers buying these guns. Is just me or have firearm sales not dropped?

Surely Cahill would be parading this multitude of straw buyers through the streets if they actually existed. I've only seen a couple of cases make headlines, and considering how even airguns are shown in media photos as part of "illegal weapons" seizures when they turn up at a bust, the absence of stories about newly charged or convicted straw buyers is a big red flag.

Yes, well, we know that. He is very effective at scare tactics for people who do not know any better and take him at his word though. A modern day Phillip Alpers. He is also very good at deflection when questioned by a half assed reporter who is in on the scam as well. None of the media ask the questions that should be asked. I have no solutions for this immediately although.

Interesting, How can you state there were unreported incidents, if they weren't reported, how do we know about them? To be able to inform us about them, they would need to be reported so we knew they existed so they could be reported as unreported incidents. (Conjecture on part of who?)?

Giving him the benefit of doubt, maybe he meant unreported by the media, so the general public don't know about them, but the police were involved. In that case, some more information would have given him credibility, but that isn't exactly his strong point.

if something is unreported obviously theres a reason for that ,often relating to security or ongoing investigation.to have this compromised by a yapping "anti" union official is just another hazard of modern NZ life or a typical trumpish style tactic. speaking to a couple of rellies in the blue brigade recently one wonders why he wasnt shot into a po and pushed under the bed. the others comments are unprintable! .

Mine was more tongue in cheek, yes there will be reasons but as a comment with no context, I was just being petty.

Cahill is just one part of it. Go and have a listen on Parliament on Demand to the likes of Ginny Anderson, Duncan Webb and Opposition MPs rhetoric and that was only over the minor Clubs & Ranges Amendments. Believe me Cahill's latest is very tame stuff to what's coming for the full bore Arms Act Amendments and the Hunters & Shooters of our fair land better get ready to stand up for a knock down drag out fight and it's gonna be dirty. Nuff said
