I’ve never met Cam Slater, but he helped me out with a person giving grief on FB.
Dealt to him in no uncertain terms, he’s on my good list

The cynical old bastard in me can't help but wonder about this info been sent to the worst possible person (from the FSAs point of view).
    Conspiracy theory time
What if the "secure" data was hacked and sent to Slater ? It would highlight how insecure it is either way.

Secure information systems usually rely on layers, checks and balances. Apart from screening your staff, I would have thought that a minimum of two sets of eyes going over data leaving the 'secure environment' is one of the simplest ways to avoid this sort of information breach happening.

Off topic but the same thing.
My better half goes out of her way to have nothing to do with social media, or internet, but recently got a E Mail from the IRD saying sorry but your details have been leaked to face book. Top man Government level, fobbed it off as a minor breech of no importance. Were couple of hundred people info leaked, question is what the hell is IRD playing with facebook anyway!
She is pissed ‘the age of information’ ,where nothing is safe. Every day I have the uneasy feeling the world is dumbing down, now wear is my tinfoil hat

Not a couple of hundred. Couple of hundred thousand people's data.

What is particularly concerning in this case is that IR apparently had no idea that these incidents, including the intentional sharing by IR staff of identifiable personal details of 268,000 New Zealand taxpayers with social media platforms had occurred”.

Seems to be quite a strong reaction, I await the response from FSA or whoever is responsible.

Tis a fuck up of spectacular scale. This should not be surprising to many here.

We see these data leaks time after time be it FAL details, medical, IRD or whatever but we never see anyone being held accountable. All that ever happens is we get an oops my bad, sorry bout that.
Its utter bullshit! There should be accountability, reprocussions...people should lose their jobs. Employees in these positions should know without doubt there are standards that you are expected to work at and there is a price to pay when you fuck up but we never see or hear that.

Just for clarity this is not a hack, a breach of the system, or even a systems failure. This is human error. It may not even be related to the registry itself, it fact from the description it sounds unlikely.
