I came across a medical study from the UK which had recorded all the people killed with sub 12ft/lbs air rifles. Mainly accidents up close in the eye or under the arm. Deffinately something best kept in the hands of responsible people not just sold on mass to the public unchecked. They're not firearms but I had one that I put right through a piece of 40mm thick mdf, that is enough to sink about 3" into flesh at 100m. They made the right move to license PCP air rifles I reckon. Makes it harder for idiots to buy one

There was 3 people shot of fitzherbert Ave about 3 months back. One guy needing surgery to get the pellet removed from his head. It was sitting between the skin and bone.
Dont think the shooter was found.

I agree they should be licensed too.... the higher power ones, tho even my one that shot me 30 odd years ago didn't penetrate further only because it hit my sternum, and yes the daisy hunting pellet was very slightly flattened, I would be surprised if that rifle shot a lead pellet at anymore than 600fps new and that was really minimum power for rabbits.

Which leaves us with a bit of a quandary..... The last thing I want to see in this country is more rules and regulations on what can be shot by who and where..... the kiwi way/lifestyle is almost completely gone already due mostly to people moving here because its so great then immediately complaining about everything that is so great and trying to turn it in to the shithole they escaped from.

Correct. I'm not a natural born NZer, been here a while though. The problem lies with your average garden variety dickhead, and most importantly, how we deal with them/breed them

Yes without destroying the kiwi way of life, I grew up rural..I had free rein with a air rifle from 5 years old, my job was to shoot starlings and thrushes in the sheds....unsupervised.
Yes technically illegal then as now but I didnt kill any cops or anyone else for that matter......
Certainly you dont want anything capable of killing in the hands of dickheads like a knife for example or a bit of pvc and a golf ball and lighter fluid etc and this is where it gets really difficult to legislate and police without making the whole country a police state.

I hear you mate. Age ten with air rifles, crossbows you name it. Used to make pipe bombs, boosted with the old man's pistol powder, fucking excellent, not good for the old mans reloading though hahaha. Used to disappear for days sometimes with my buddy and his old mans .303, with a couple of rounds only. I think it breeds responsibility. Like, "you've got this, for now, have fun, but don't fuck it up"
