Not having the paperwork in front of me now, I cant quote the exact wording. But I believe it says that the referee has to be a reli, spouse or someone living with you.

No problem as they just do a phone interview according to said officer. I don't have any family in NZ.

Just had a follow up call from Nelson police, saying that I cant use sis as a referee as they need to do face to face interview. I point out the lack of family in NZ, and that my ex is unlikely to speak very well of me if I put her name down.

I have now been told to put down the name of someone that knows me well, and is preferably local.
Seems they make they change the rules to suit
Im in Ill be a referee for you, have known you long enough?

    Same here.
What the police "require" seems to vary depending on the region and who you deal with.

The regional inconsistencies applied by various AOs across police districts was acknowledged as a concern at the recent road-show re the FAL processes. My impression was that it was something that would be attended to...

Some years ago when I renewed immediately following a separation, the AO insisted on interviewing my ex. His comment to me later was that he could quite understand why I’d left her....

Just had my renewal too. AO was mostly good but did try to tell me I had to store magazines separately and it was illegal to store guns with magazines in. Safe to say I corrected her, though she had a pretty blank look of non-understanding when I mentioned there are issues with police changing their policies when the law hasn't changed.

For both a renewal and a first time licence. Spouse, partner or next of kin are face to face. If none of these are in NZ then someone who knows you well and always face to face.

For a renewal licence, the unrelated referee (in the unrelated referee section) can be a phone call.

For a first time licence, the unrelated referee (in the unrelated referee section) is face to face.

    I renewed mine last month.

Firstly - I got a letter notifying me that my license was due to expire, a month before it would expire. Big tick to coppers there.
Secondly, BOTH of my referees were phone calls - my mother in Palmerston North, my friend (paramedic for St Johns, not that it matters) in Auckland
Then I was phoned and a time made for a visit from assessing person - checked my security, had a yarn and actually a decent chat.
2 weeks later my replacement license arrived.

Yes, I'm only on a "lowly" A-cat license...... but I was impressed. Quick, easy, simple, efficient. So big ups to the Albany area guy here in Auckland.

First time I've heard of the next of kin being a phone call. If the NOK lives outside of your district then the interview section for that person is normally faxed or mailed through to the police in that area for a face to face interview.

Yeah, like Tasbay said, that seems to be the general rules to the process from my observations.
