Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.

pretty sure they always have been unless your a gang member then no reg required and have a nice day....
Rumour had it a while back that some of that register accidently got deleted....maybe that's what this could be actually about? trying to get the data back but applying it to everyone?
That's true Thar, but those "naughty people" arent compelling us to get locked into a system few of us support, so I'm afraid I will hold the Police to a somewhat higher standard than I do Joe Criminal.
Caesars wife must not only be above reproach, but be seen to be above reproach.
ETA. You know what - the system deserves to have scorn poured on it. It's a vote grabbing, dishonest pile of rubbish, and I resent my taxes being wasted on it.
Um, not sure if I understand your post @Tahr but if you mean that the old "A" category firearms were/are excluded from new Registry and Restricted firearms (pistols, Old mssa, collections etc) were registered then thats exactly what we had before.
From a personal viewpoint as a E and B holder the old register was full or errors and omissions and we learnt to make bloody sure we never "binned" any Police approved paperwork just in case it was needed to prove the error was theirs..
AND no register would have solved the "problem" that got us here in the first place. That man applied and was issued a licence by the authorities and we somehow got the blame and were punished!!.
Really again this is all just "tilting at windmills". I don't support it but as a good law abiding citizen I will comply eventually once all the bugs have had time to settle out.
In the mean time I will be avoiding anything that would trigger the activating circumstance so retailers will be missing out.
Trust the dog.........................................ALWAYS Trust the dog!!
Yeh if naughty people can find out without the register who has what, then I'm sure the police could too. So what's the point of the registry? It's just marketing.
The email leak points to some crappy manual process which wouldn't have happened with some pretty basic coding. Tick a bunch of names or get a script to get a group of people and the system sends out a bunch of individual emails. Copy and pasting a bunch of email addresses into a manually created outlook email is asking for trouble.
I'll register when I need to but not before.

I can understand how this happened and it comes under "shit happens, I just didn't think it would be this fast"
But what I'm wondering about is what was the point of the email in the first place ?
A: Update some addresses that they should of already had on file ?
OR
B: Initiate some more activating events by people confirming their addresses ?
My thoughts would be more likely option B
Thats what I was wondering sending you an email to update your email?? What are you going to update it to once you recieve it??
From FSA site
"The first time you notify us of a change in your licence holder information (such as personal, business, contact or licence details) you must register all items in your possession within 30 days."
reply to their BS email and you've got 30 days
Not that inspiring.

Asking for a friend...
How about the following scenario: Local club wants more qualified/certified range officers. Does sticking your hand up for this mean you now come to the attention of the FSA and will have to register your toys sooner than you'd initially planned?
I've searched the FSA site and read the legislation, but cannot find an answer. Maybe it won't. Maybe it will. Perhaps its better to wait until next year and see how it all pans out...
Technically speaking a cc/bcc generic reminder email isn't really a considered privacy breach. If the email content some actual information like names, phone numbers, or lists of firearms then it would be. I know it's debatable because it implies you might be a current LFO.
I think only contact with the FSA or purchases are triggering, becoming a RO within your club should be ok. I would pose that question to someone in your club though.
On the plus side if you do have a triggering event would be there's some good bargains out there now with less people been cautious about buying stuff.
Well, technically speaking it's the effect on the people who have had data released without their permission that decide whether there was a breach or not - and in this case if it was my data that got breached and released (i.e. my personal contact details) I'd be highly upset. It might not be 'really considered a privacy breach' from the boffin technical end but a privacy breach it is nonetheless.
