Good result but deserved a lot more

Good to see police solving real crime relating to firearms illegally in hands of crims.
Tauranga man jailed after an AK47 and four other rifles found at his home - NZ Herald

But .... pity that the judge only saw fit to give the guy 25 mo ?? wtf ?
With a career track record like he's got including priors for illegal possession of firearms & gang connections ..... they should throw away the damn key.

Reporting an AK-47 as a "high powered rifle" is pathetic.

Anything more than a kids slug gun is Hipowered to reporters. Glad they gave some jail time rather than one or two monts PD as most other cases.

Clearly if he has been found guilty of illegal possession of firearms twice before, he has no regard at all for our firearms laws and can be expected to offend again. Why should that not result in preventitive detention?

I can think of several more effective ways to free up space in our jails. Clearly in this case and many others, several stints in jail have failed to rehabilitate, so why bother wasting more tax payer $ ???

But the operating mantra of these people is "its only a crime if you get caught" could that rational not be applied to chainsaws proposal?

An AK-47 is a high powered rifle even if it's an assault rifle.
