The quality of the thermal and experience of the user does play a big part in how good target identification is. I use top range gear several nights a week and occasionally have to wait until the target moves to get a positive identification
But I never add alcohol to a nights work

As I said. Target identification is exactly the same as with a normal optical sight. Sometimes you need to wait to get a better look before you can 100% identify your target. Wait for the "object" to move, turn, get closer, whatever it takes. You don't shoot at a "brown thing" throught your scope, and you don't shoot at a "white blob" throught your thermal. If you can't 100% identify it, DON'T shoot.

If this is true, these are the idiot the authorities should be going after rather than the BS range rules and trying to kill off shooting sports.

There should be jail time for atleast the shooter, and probably all involved, and none of them should be allowed a gun licence ever again.
There are freak incidents, and then there is this.

In fact if I were an arms officer I'd be targeting known areas like this and removing peoples guns and licences, enough people have been shot on public land by spotlighters now that there is no excuse for it.

I’m still finding this hard to believe. Surely there would be something on social media about it. Has anyone seen anything posted about this?

Will probably come out in the following days. Media seems to be a day or two late on many stories. But what a tragedy.

Only when it suits them. Would have thought they’d be all over this. Is it because this happened in Te Urewera?

its got to be woven into an anti gun diatribe 1st alas . me ,Im bloody horrified and infuriated at same time ,fuckwits all ,someone should have swallowed to put it bluntly.

Guns are simpler to operate than a motor vehicle-we dont have handbooks and reams of regs -we have 7simple rules all based on COMMON SENSE yes COMMON SENSE,but the highest functioning mammals or at least specimens of seem to still be unteachable.

    If its true its tragic.
Alcohol comes out once all firearms are locked away, it's just a given. Hope it's a rumor
If this area is so notorious why no patrols, Even use the military, exercise for info gathering. Army got all the gear and would probably appreciate getting out of camp
Police can then deal with it.

Watch this vid mate. I don’t think Tuhoe people would appreciate the presence of the police let alone the military.

Actually this is a good video for everyone to watch.

Read the police affidavit of interception evidence regarding the training camps. It's quite long-winded but pages 80-115 give a good sense of the flavour, such as:

“there’s the Al Qaeda manual and that’s fucking good. That’s right up to date”
“I’m getting on to sixty, I can still kill to the day I die”
“strategy will divide, will divide Aotearoa, “extreme violence, and extreme fucken actions too.”
“five well trained dudes on the end of those guns they can take out a hundred people”
“You know like the IRA in England”
    “It’s gonna happen here”
“I’m a warrior…I’m ready to die mate, I’m gonna hurt this country”
“I wanna leave this planet making sure that I’ve done a fucken huge amount of harm to this country”
