Thread: Hunter Shot

Has the article been changed? There doesn't seem to be much detail there at all except "A Paeroa man has been fatally shot while hunting in the Te Urewera Ranges in Ruatāhuna.

The 63-year-old was found dead by police who were responding to the activation of a personal locator beacon around 2am on Friday, December 1.

A man, who is not thought to be known to the victim, is assisting police with their enquiries."

Hopefully it does come out IDC so others can learn from what happened in this sad situation.

@Kelton I suspect that one of the others in the party had the PLB and activated it...Or the victim may have had time to activate his (I do not know) but somehow I think if the PLB was hit that it would be damaged enough not to work...

I think he meant 'hit' the button on the PLB

Two PLB's were set off. One in each party I believe. rescue chopper went in, but then left as status zero patients are not transported in 'rescue' helicopters as its not a rescue, its a recovery.

Yet nothing on maim stream news(tv) ..strange day’s alright.

Incredibly sad news for his family & friends, losing a loved one in such tragic circumstances. One can only hope the investigation brings accountability and closure in near future.

Maybe more because of the crime scene ?
I've stuffed plenty of dead body's on a rescue choppers even though what your saying is correct.

Our last search resulted in the body being choppered to the road then transported via hearse.

I worked with Mike and his brother in the early 2000s. A very end for Mike and his family.

Yup, death in the community. Police have jurisdiction under the guise of the coroner. Body is left to be part of the investigation and a machine wouldn't be used after the fact unless access issues were significant.

Body was flown out the day before I started the other thread. But nothing had hit the headlines.

Regarding the stuff story linked above I had a conversation with the journalist in regards to her last paragraph.

Police issued the following advice for anyone who owns or uses firearms:
Always treat your firearm as loaded, [what about your mates firearm?]
Always point firearms in a safe direction,
Chamber your cartridge only when you are shooting, [oh really, is that for 30 seconds, or five hours?]
Identify your target beyond all doubt,
Check your firing zone,
Store and transport firearms and ammunition safely,
Avoid alcohol or drugs when handling firearms.

Of course the actual rules state "every firearm" and "when you are ready to fire".
She confirmed she knows nothing about firearms or hunting, but also denied putting her own "touch" on the very simple rules.
She simply copied and pasted the content in the press release issued by the police

I'll ask for a copy of the press release.

I think "Identify your target beyond all doubt" is the key issue in this case.
