Administration of policy by the Firearms Authority etc. move from Police "to another department such as the Department of Internal Affairs."

The body language of the three gents announcing the new govt and policies indicated to me that they were quite proud of what they had acheived.

There might be a perception of public safety but the numbers for gun crime a generally getting worse.
So what you say and what you do are maybe not going to align

Well let's pretend there are thousands and thousands of unlawful semi-automatics out there, and let's pretend that's the difference between what was handed in versus the customs records of what was imported.
One might reasonably draw the conclusion that these are not going to be registered and therefore a register is going to do very little to improve public safety.
Law abiding responsible firearm owners are no threat to the safety of citizens.

I’ve yet to see any concrete evidence that it is improving public safety.

I'm far too cynical to believe much will change. They have at least promised to look into it and that's absolutely bloody fantastic... but when I read the words "... and review whether the Firearms Registry is improving public safety..." I don't get warm fuzzies at all. Those who are going to be asked to justify the registry are of course going to be able to justify it beyond reproach and convince the government its absolutely necessary. The only thing that will help is if the community is proactive in communicating their feelings directly to the ministers and questioning every scrap of evidence that is presented in support of it.

The greater majority do not understand why it is not going to work and fear-mongering leads them to believe they will be safer because of it. Clearly nobody is safer but the MSM have done a great job of pushing the agenda and that means education is required to show why its not the solution. Education is going to cost money. Be prepared to front up with some money if you want positive change. I can assure you the "anti" lobby sure as hell will be.

What did you guys expect would happen? "registry disbanded 5 minutes after the meeting" ?

Of course they will have to come up with sound reasoning! The reason why a firearms registry is a silly idea is exactly what everyone has been saying for months/years: it costs $ and achieves nothing! But just because a few grumpy old shooters say so does not mean its true for the wider NZ public.

National have themselves said repeatedly that they would look at the cost-to benefit aspect of it. And that assessment will be very clear (if not done by ideologues, which I doubt it will).

This is a big win! and much more than we could have hoped for!
