The Argus 2 use a Sony nightshot sensor. As long as you have some ambient light (streetlights, moon), they're amazing in colour at night. The IR nightvision on them is really good too. They use microsd cards on the cameras, and have cloud storage too, which is very handy.

I have multiple of these cameras around the house with solar panels, and they're fantastic (and much cheaper - about half the price -than Arlos). The only thing they don't have is the arlo ability to lock out particular areas in the sensor to avoid traffic triggering signals etc. but you can just position the cameras to avoid giving too many false positive recording triggers.

    I use Nest.

Streams to your phones, PC and alerts you with messages if it detects activity.
Has a speaker you can talk through the camera(s) and infrared ability at night.

You do have a subscription fee, but there are 3 options.

Time to raise this old thread from the dead. Was looking at getting security cameras for outside my house (well, its a rental, so have to ask landlord first) as there have been a few break ins and car tyres being slashed in my area. The Reolink ones with solar panels are top of my list right now, fits in with my tight budget being less than 200 dollars including solar panel and SD card from PBtech as they are having a flash sale. The 50 dollar solar panel while expensive by itself is probably cheaper than hiring someone to do the wiring for a direct source of electricity.

We use the Ring hardwired sensor light floodlight cameras.
Just swapped our standard sensor lights out for them. Decent cameras, two way comms, siren, can set the alert boundaries on the camera. $345 from Bunnings and $4 a month for cloud use. Plenty of other features.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

Exactly what my son did and it's great. He has four cams- one at the front gate and three round the house. Backed up to the Cloud so there's no risk even if someone was prepared to find and dig out the recorder. He also has a Ring unit at the front gate in case he wants to talk to someone

My Argus eco camera and solar panel arrived a while ago. Works well. I can set it up so that every time sometimes passes by too close to the camera, I get an alert on my phone and a video gets saved to the cloud. Alerts can be turned on or off depending on date, time of day, or just manually. I can see when my husband orders pizza.

Well, I put gadgetman through a hard time! trying to to get my head round this subject quite a few years ago now.
I started cheap Aliexpress and had some regrets, although there is one good seller on the China site that sells Dahua.
The cameras have improved with tracking and tripwire etc and on it goes, cameras that only are good for number plate recognition at night.
And of course a good nvr that will work with the cameras! not all do.
I can run mine to the phone and emails when away and some other things that are not for knowledge here.
But I have a very technical mate, because it lost me in the end in the set up.
Tracking focus is far better than fixed focus, but mix it up with a fixed focus helps cost.
