Prison serves, to a greater or lesser extent, 4 purposes.

    1) Punishment. To me, sure. Prison would be a punishment - to your average Nomad/Mongrel/Black Power/who cares, not so much
    2) Deterrence. See 1)
    3) Rehabilitation. I know a psychologist who works in the prison service. It isn't great, and there aren't enough resources or people to do a worthwhile job for/on everyone. The success stories tend to be self selecting
    4) Isolation from society. This one does work, but eventually (nearly) everyone gets out, and then we are all bitching about the lack of success in 3)

I used to be a fan of capital punishment, but over the years I've changed my mind. I now have a problem with handing the Government the power to do an unrecoverable act - there have been enough examples of malfeasance, bias and just incompetence that I'd rather pay for them to be put away - forever, if necessary.

For joe shithead, there really does need to be a way to get them out of the lifestyle that they live - and it isn't by doing what we currently are doing, that is for sure.

I can see why you are in charge of the humour section on here
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.

now between you and gone troppo you guys are onto it - many years ago I ran PD ( Periodic Detention ) in Opotiki they could work with me up the Waioeka gorge pulling out old fence lines or if they played up - sweep Opotiki streets - now they hated that so were happy to come out with me - they hated being seen in public - so dress these firearm bandits in pink - sweep streets by hand but only after serving at least 5 years for firearm offences

Outsource our prison sentences to Indonesia. Sentences to be served there. Bulk fund them.

No they’ll get hammer by Nash. He’ll tell them to stop being naughty, it’s just not on.
    That’ll sort em out.

I've seen a lot of guys go to prison Ross. Hand on heart I can tell you that every single one of them came out worse than when they went in.

I agree that what we are currently doing isn't working, but what alternative is there??

I like the fact that whilst they are in there, they can't do anymore damage to anyone. I've never seen any of them get rehabilitated. It just doesn't happen.

It's such a shame the PC gang won't allow this to happen. Removing silt and slash would likely be their only positive contribution to society ever.

Yeah get the guns of the street they will find new ones. Get them off the street (permanently), problem solved.

    Singapore has it sorted.
A public lashing on the bare buttocks with a rattan cane (wielded by a big man who doesn't hold back on the effort).
Seems that very few people ever reoffend again.
