Resurrecting Roys Hill as a high power rifle range would taken a large miracle and a heap of money. The big issue when it shut was the Army decided that after more than 100yrs of incident-free civilian shooting, they would call in the technicality that they had to have control of the entire danger zone which is a private farm. Since then, there has been major encroachment of lifestyle blocks and vineyards. There's no coming back from that

    Greetings,
I thought land tenure would be the big hurdle and was the reason for closure. There was an earlier range on that site. I found the mounds one day between the main range and the road, There was another one North of Taradale shooting into the back of Sugar Loaf long disused even 60 years ago. We don't know what we've got till its gone to quote the old song.

Ive seen photos of an old shooting range setup on the far side of TeMata peak too. Wish that still existed!

    Greetings,
Some good news for a change. My FB Secretary spotted a post from Rivers to Ranges about good progress to reopening their range, pictures too.
    Regards Grandpamac.

there was a range inside Timaru town boundary.....arguably a VERY safe one too... down hill to south of girls high, across the road is a soccor field,on right side /west and across south end there is a high bluff...somewhere in the 20meter area..... houses all around and above it now...
