I think there will still be a registration in some form, we have signed something with the un regarding small arms trade or something along those lines. Id like to see what it is in its final form first...

Changing browser eventually worked.

So far I have registered 12 items, which took an hour on the phone. The person on the other end is not likely to be knowledgeable about makes and models but will take your advice on finding the right information. They also have the ability to modify and make new entries in the system based on your advice so don’t feel obliged to stick with the options that they have if you think it’s wrong.
Wow one hour! Glad I got my new rifle before registration came in. Sad because I want a nicer shotgun for clays but it's going to have wait

I just tried to use realme. What a wank fest Fuck that for a joke.

You summed that up nicely rushy.
I didn't even try as I had an estate lot to deal with so just rang them.
I had few curly ones but no problems in the end as every thing had some sort of serial number.

Once you've got it set up it does save time as it takes out a lot of the login fuck arounds on other govt websites. Except for MyIRD which is another level of FUBAR.

I can’t remember when I set it up but was certainly more than a decade ago. Can’t remember my username or password but have tried the obvious. Not going to ring them to sort it out as I don’t need to use the register yet and by the time I do need to use it I would have forgotten again (one of the benefits of old age is that password security is improved by forgetfulness). Also I don’t see any reason to ever use government websites, they have nothing I need nor want.

That's the truth - I had to get hold of IRD for a one-off query (normally this is an accountant job but the query was related to Kiwisaver contribution status of a past employer so the poor old accountant couldn't sort that one). Rang them up - got cut off three times. On the fourth it told me I had to book a callback and the three options for times weren't suitable spaced out over the next 14 days. So I tried to email them - they've stopped accepting emails for some reason (I think they were quoting something about security or some other bullshit). Went looking for other options - only other one is MyIRD which I'm not signed up for and it's no point going through that much work for one request for info that actually isn't my issue to sort. So I did the sensible thing, bloody ignored it and if IRD cares enough they can get hold of my past employer and ask them why they stopped paying into my Kiwisaver.

What a complete clusterfluck of epic proportions, I feel for the poor bastards that get trapped in the Working For Families debt issues as you literally cannot get hold of the fools to sort things on a timely basis. If your income changes week by week and it takes 14 days to get hold of the fools how the hell do you work that out? Regular monthly scheduled contacts to pass the info through? Do better IRD!

So they tell me that the firearms renewal I have in a couple of years or so can be done now and they are encouraging me to do it as the price will go up and what they are doing is extending the expiry dates so in effect I'll renew and get a 12 year licence or however it works out (might be 13 years but I'm not entertaining that haha). It's now a question of which is going to be cheaper - early renewal and get in before the licensing fees go up, or wait and deal with the time it's going to take fighting the registration system as I can see many hours on the phone with Wellington.

It gets worse! It turns out that an efficient member of my household was able to tell me my username and password (which I had correct except for upper vs lower case characters). So I just used the correct username and password and fuck me dead the RealMe website now wants me to call them to “add a second-factor authentication”. When did the world become so fucked up?

At any given point in time, if you are a government agency, talking to me on the telephone, I can give you much information issued by the NZ government that in combination is extremely likely to only be known by me (e.g. my unique drivers license number, my unique firearms license number, my IRD number, my unique passport number, my unique military service number ad infinitum (superannuation, veterans affairs etc) so why the fuck can you not trust that it is me when you are talking to me particularly when the reason for the phone call is for me to provide you with information that you want to record which is known only to me. For fuck sake this is so screwed up.

2-Factor Authentication is a pretty common thing. This is the security side of things so randos can't just get your Username/Password that you saved on your PC/Phone or uplifted from a piece of paper you wrote it down on. You not being able to remember your username/password or not being able to set up 2FA is not a failure of the system.

You can just thank your lucky stars that you do not have to deal with Government departments that we are forced to communicate with: District Councils, Regional councils, MBIE, MPI, IRD. They all have fucked up systems that do not operate as advertised

MyIRD I find not terrible to use. Just need to remember password.
