    As said before I think commonsensical has to come into play but would love to see an amendment to the law.

    Have been into a couple of cafes in Invercargill with rifle in a bag (no vehicle to put it in so no issue there) few funny faces from customers and explained loudly the law to friends that I was meeting.
    Common sense doesn't work well as a defense in court unfortunately.

    In that situation what exactly could mr 223nut be charged with?

    Is scaring retards threw no fault of your own an actual offence or just heavily frowned upon?.

    The vehicle attendance thing as I mentioned before is unrealistic. Same point as what @Jexla mentioned in regards to staying in a motel or at a non FAL holder friends place.

    What are we suppose to do there?? Buy another safe and bolt it to their wall? Sleep with pistols under the covers in the motel room?? Seriously how is the law still this vague in 2018.

    What situation are you talking about? Because I was not talking about any specific situation, just in general.

    I should have removed the top and bottom line in my quote, but I was lazy.

    @veitnamcam

    No need to charge him, he's a nut.

    Think @Jexla, from context, was thinking about that old chestnut of an unattended vehicle with weapons in it.

    I thought I explained that I wasn't talking about either of those scenarios, but about leaving firearms in a vehicle. I was just too lazy too remove those lines from the quote.

    I'd agree that'd be an idea if you were LEAVING firearms there when you were no longer staying there. But even so, in my case I use my in-laws bach so the idea isn't so great then...

    Buy a bicycle lock and lock it to a rafter, or pipes, or ...

    I think that since the law states that you cannot leave a firearm unattended in a vehicle then the inference is that it is a sufficient and lawful reason to carry the firearm. The bit in the law about scaring is to do with intentional intimidation and threat.

    Interesting to see the different comments and ways it works across the country. I appreciate the thread staying on track - it's good to get a wide range of inputs. It's always hard to tell how close to the truth individual sources are sometimes

    Looks like I'll be folding up a steel box and installing hard points in the vehicle, then get input from the local constabulary. At worst I end up with a secure place to keep my tools!

    @canross

    I expect you won't get it approved by the AO, as AO has no legal discretion where the law is clear.

    Only exception I've heard of (on this forum I think) was where the "vehicle" was in fact a house truck in which the FAL holder lived, but there are also cases of an AO declining to approve storage in such a vehicle. Such is the nature of discretion.

    Unfortunately I think you're right, at least in that it would be a darn struggle. As others have said, it's pretty ridiculous that there's no possible way to leave a firearm in a vehicle... it's done all the time in Canada and there are no mass thefts or problems... just means you don't have to live in close orbit of your car or carry a gun around and risk getting shot by the police or charged with causing a public disturbance (which does happen when people legally carry their cased firearms from the car to house).

    A "house bus" is still a vehicle, and in the case of the one mentioned by myself, is still very much road worthy and road legal.. Crazy !
