    Sometimes I shoot standing up.

    It's not recommended.
It will almost certainly shoot to a different point of impact if shot off a bipod or pack in the traditional manner.

Noticed on one of the latest South Island rifle walkers videos on YouTube they missed a Chamois while resting the barrel on something and missed. I did wonder about that at the time of watching.

If you rest the end of a rifle barrel on a solid object then take and release the weight of the rifle, you will be surprised how much flex there is in the barrel itself.

The way that you should use that rest is first turn the rest to face the opposite direction, rest the forend of the rifle on the cushion at the front and the stock in the V at the back. In theory and 99% of the time in practice, the barrel/suppressor should not be resting on anything.
Most barrels are free floated from stocks in modern bolt action rifles, the motivations behind this is to not interfere with the barrel harmonics. If the barrel is rested on a rock or clamped when fired, its harmonics will be affected which in turn will affect accuracy.

here is a video that demonstrates:

    Greetings All,
The NZ Police Shooting Range Manual contains Section 10 Safety considerations for ad-hoc sighting in when not on a range. You can download it from the Police website. It should be a must read for anyone contemplating doing a bit sighting in on their or a friends property. Ignorance is no excuse when it comes to safety.

Very short and common sense type stuff.

    Thanks @Makros.
That was section 10 in an earlier version but largely unchanged. As you say, common sense stuff. Its the need for a decent backstop that trips people up.

I couldn't imagine having to travel etc just to shoot I think I'd give up if I had to. Have little range here on the farm 100 for sighting then a few gongs out to 700. Makes load development easy being able to duck out and shoot loads etc whenever. Forum members welcome to have a burn on it if wanted, located West Otago.
