Lead shot over Lake Taupo for shooting clays?

Anyone know the legality of using lead shot when shooting clays over Lake Taupo? I know there's a couple of boats doing clay shooting as a tourist attraction.

I'm not planning on shooting over Taupo myself - lead or otherwise - but it was a discussion at work today and no-one knew for sure. I'm not aware of any specific prohibition.

Pretty sure the lead ban is only for shooting waterfowl gamebirds, unless there is a local bylaw. From memory you can hunt quail and pheasants along riverbeds with lead shot.

Anyway, there are thousands of lead lines and numerous lead downrigger balls on the bed of Taupo. Lead is inert and in deep water in not accessible to waterfowl.

Without checking the exact wording of the change, I believe that lead shot cannot be discharged over a waterway 3 metres wide or greater period

DoC and Feds shoot geese over water from helicopters with buckshot.

There is no restriction on shooting lead over Taupo. Lead is only a restriction for hunting waterfowl as set out inder schedual 1 in the F&G regs.

Thanks all, I appreciate the replies. They line up with what I thought. If there were any restrictions I would think it would be more sensible to prevent plastic wads washing up on the beach than worry about a little lead in deep water, but the rules dont always make sense!

I tend to pick the wads up if shooting at a stationary target. Generally, they land within 25 metres and they have to be bad for livestock.
