with my H&R its just a dowel/plastic rod inserted inside the magazine spring, unscrew cap to take barrel off (as you do to clean anyway) rotate end bit inside mag tube 90 degrees cap and spring and all comes out...put in /take out plug/dowel as you wish....its good idea to clean in here say once a year anyway.

Only learned that when the shells started to stick inside my Mossberg 500. It became a single shot until I opened the mag tube and removed all the emulsified packing grease, grass seed and dirt.

A] i was told by murray cameron no less w pitting in the chamber/bore area is a no no in any shotty.
B i doubt that ols stevens pump would be suitable for steel so no bargain.
not to mention hard to get parts for.
buy a second hand REMINgTON 870 [or new]not that guncity rip off of them and you,l usually get a magazine plug with it if not im pretty sure ive got one somewhere from one of my remy 12,s.
if you buy new you,l get one with a trigger lock and key as well.

I don't know who Murray Cameron is haha.

That's true. Have to use steel except on private land so wouldn't be much use.

I'll keep an eye out for one. I originally was going to get a Mossberg maverick as that's what a mate recommended.

even on ponds on private land you need steel only on paddock hunts for ducks and geese are you lead enabled.
i like old shottys and if money and ammo availability werent a factor id have a couple of sixteens and a twenty or two.
only cos you cant buy 9.s for the sixteen 8,s yes but no 9,s

    Sounds like an interesting fellow.

What cheap and cheerful steel capable shotgun would you recommend?

700 bucks is a pretty good price. I'll have to save my pennies a bit more.
