Im from germany, so yeah, i had 2 dachshunds, one a wire-haired in black-brown and the other one a short-haired in fox-red.
Both dogs were strong (regarding their body limits) and headstrong too. The need a firm but fair hand and they wand to be part of the pack.
Mine were always in the house, and behaved friendly with kids and foreigners... but once i shot a boar that the wire.haired drove towards me. He was guarding it while i went to get somebody to help me recover the boar from the woods. Another hunter, a huge and fairly strong bloke, i met on the way told me he would get the boar, i should get the car in the meantime. I told him 3 times that just aint a good idea, well... he didnt want to listen.
When i got back to my dog and the boar the guy was standing there with his rubber boots in pieces. Dont underestimate a german dachshund!
Besides that they are used for fox hunting over here in germany. They go in the fox´s den and drive the fox out. As there might be badgers in there too it explains why the Teckel (as we call the dachshund in german) not only needs a strong will, perseverance and toughness, but also a lot of brains and smarts!
There are stil a lot of breeders here in germany breeding pure hunting and working dogs, albei the fact that the Teckel became the No.1 dog for grannies. There have been some problems with genetics illnesses, but hopefully this beautiful and gorgoues race will be there for many more generations.
If somebody needs more advice on breeders or anything... let me know! Happy to help!
