I doubt anyone would breed from a dog purely based on its Trialing results. To suggest they would, is simply taking their comments out of context. Trialing results should be a consideration when deciding to breed, but not the only consideration. The same can be said for normal hunting performance i.e. non-trialing.

I draw the comparison to when I was involved in 4x4 offroad competitions……It’s a ‘Put Up or Shut Up’ situation. You run what you brung, and you hope you brung enough! Your and the dog’s performance (or lack of) is there for everyone to see and draw their own conclusions. The performance is evaluated by judges who will give you pretty direct feedback and while the fields may be small, the standard you are being evaluated against is high. You choose to either take the feedback on board, or not.

Their feedback on your performance is not clouded by some nonsensical bullshit, romance or emotion that often comes from owning or breeding the dog. In my view, their critique is going to be considerably more honest than someone who only sees their dog’s performance in isolation.

In the P&S arena, if a dog can be consistently competitive against the quality dogs of Robyn Gaskin, Dave Sheeley, the Connors etc (there are plenty of others, but these are the folk I’ve seen achieve this regularly, hence why I’ve singled them out) then it is likely you’ve got a pretty good dog on your hands. This is simply a reflection of the standard your dog is being evaluated against, the benchmark if you will. The same goes for Spaniel Trials.

There is a lot of dogs bred only on hunting performance. In fact I would go so far as to say the bulk of these hunting types are bred that way.

Absolutely Steven! I would suggest that the overwhelming majority of 'working' gun dog litters whelped in this country is done so on the basis of the hunting performance of the parents, not Trial results. In fact, as a prospective puppy purchaser, if I were offered a pup that was being sold on the basis of their QC Trial rsults, I would be asking "well how do the parents actually perform in the field".

Trial results to one person might mean a lot, but to others they are worthless. Not to mention the fact, that for many breeds there is no appropriate trailing format available to them, or they simply have no interest in trailing altogether.
    Wirehunt and HF1 like this.

Completely agree! On the face of it, the QC should be achieved by any dog that can pretend to point in the direction of a trap when it gets close enough. And then do it again. Yet so many fail to achieve it. My latest dog included.

Not withstanding the fact that it genuinely is more difficult to achieve than it first seems, I wouldn't get a pup from a mating which was being sold on the basis of QC results only......and the key is Only

    I'll be there

To me trialling is not about the results but about what I learn about my dogs and gundogs in general in the process.
