Talking to someone who has been involved with English Setters for about 60+ years and has bred them for over 40 years, there has never been a litter (to her knowledge) from artifical insemination.
Might pay to check that out before going to the expense of collecting the semen.

That's interesting. I must pass that info on to her.

Yep, Pointer. Sure am and I'm hoping to hijack one of Lyn's setters to run at Titoki next year but will have to get down there and do some basic training with her.

It would have been Frank Tommy Olson or Noel Allen if out of Whangarai , not Upnorth Uplander - i answer in his abscence as he will be on his way north reading for the hunt

I'm HF on the other forum. Lyn Parekowhai has the Hei Tiki line which is mainly show now but her husband used to shoot over the dogs and a guy up Dargaville way has a dog from her line that he shoots over. He put his bitch to one of her dogs last year and got some good pups.

One guy picked up his pup from the airport and as he was driving home a covey of quail crossed the road so he let the 3 month old pup out to see what it would do. It went straight onto set.

I've seen a photo of 8 week old pups she bred all on set on a pheasant wing. The instinct hasn't been bred out of them but she won't sell any as guaranteed gun dogs because a lot depends on the handler - and the pup, of course.

The reason her husband doesn't shoot over them now is that he is permanently on crutches with arthritis in his spine.

There is a litter due on Monday but that is the first litter she has bred in 3 years. She is also very choosy about who the pups go to and would rather keep them forever than sell them to a home she has doubts about. That's probably why she has dogs there ranging from 3 to 13. :-)

without pissing on her strawberries, the split in spaniels , pointers and setters is more defined than in other breeds.

I got asked what breed my 2 dogs were, the funniest thing about it was that the person asking had a cocker spaniel on a lead with her.....she then proceeded to tell me that they must be cross with a springer as shes had cockers for 30 yrs and never seen any like mine.

Friends came to the Rough Shooters Trial at Te Kowhai the other week and were amazed to see spaniels there. Not being associated with gun dogs they had no idea they were actually used as gun dogs.

The English Setter person I was just talking about told me a story of being at a show one day many years ago when a woman came along with a friend and proceeded to show her 'knowledge' of dog breeds. She pointed out various Great Danes and then pointed at one of Lyn's Blue Beltons (B&W E Setter) and announced it was a Harlequin Great Dane.

Night and day, they were the first breeds to be separated. In fact the first dog show was for pointers and setters only

True - I think I heard/read somewhere that 3 generations without being shot over takes most/all of the natural instinct out of a gun dog breed. The poor Vizslas are doomed!!
