I got asked what breed my 2 dogs were, the funniest thing about it was that the person asking had a cocker spaniel on a lead with her.....she then proceeded to tell me that they must be cross with a springer as shes had cockers for 30 yrs and never seen any like mine.

Night and day, they were the first breeds to be separated. In fact the first dog show was for pointers and setters only

True - I think I heard/read somewhere that 3 generations without being shot over takes most/all of the natural instinct out of a gun dog breed. The poor Vizslas are doomed!!

Friends came to the Rough Shooters Trial at Te Kowhai the other week and were amazed to see spaniels there. Not being associated with gun dogs they had no idea they were actually used as gun dogs.

The English Setter person I was just talking about told me a story of being at a show one day many years ago when a woman came along with a friend and proceeded to show her 'knowledge' of dog breeds. She pointed out various Great Danes and then pointed at one of Lyn's Blue Beltons (B&W E Setter) and announced it was a Harlequin Great Dane.

Well, I understand that... realistically, how do you judge bid-ability, mouth etc unless you hunt them? If you breed two generations while paying no heed to such subtleties, don't be surprised it just doesn't exist anymore.

Blackfield kennels (100% hunting lines) are also planning a litter soon based more on the NZ (Leon's) lines.
