Thread: Llewellin Setter breed

I emailed Derry today and hopefully will get a reply about his breeding halt with Setters -will pass this on

He mentions in his book that pointers are his true love. I have a very well worn copy of his book "Pointers and setters'

El B, it will be interesting to hear what he says, but do you honestly think he would admit to someone he doesnt know, that he was lying about his breeding or made a mistake with his breeding of Llewellins

I thought he was game asking too. I reckon hes in for it if Derry lives up to his reputation

I think it's Irrelevant, Llewellin died in 1925, technically there hasn't been a Llewellin bred since. I agree with Mortenson, it is dangerous to bottleneck a type into such a corner, breeding on dogs whose main claim to fame was 50 plus years ago.

I wonder about not having a Llewellin bred since 1925 .It appears that Llewellin had an on going program to me -I dont know if he just stopped and said that is it! His own Llewellin setters and one imagines those that he sold within England also went to the States to carry on this line .It appears the Americans diverged from from interbreeding Llewellin to Llewellin although it was their major blood line -when does a dog cease to be a Llewellin ? as one takes Llewellin himself was introducing blood to enhance the line .

He had a few strains from memory, Dashing bondhu, Windem, Countess I think? I'm sure Derry will tell you. Why aren't they all called Llewellins too considering he bred them? Considering they all have Laverack behind them to varying degrees what does it matter? It's all marketing. In fact if memory serves me Humphrey had more to do with the developent of the modern working UK trials setter we see today than Llewellin did

All gundog history from the old countries is of interest to me, but once them bludlines of fine guundawgs hit that Eastern seaboard and beyond, my concentration drops below Goldfish 3...an American author once wrote "we just gotta bastardise them breeds",,,and yes you can see how but never why they do...trials on horseback, corse you are going to want a Brittany knocking 25 inches at the withers...really?...well, I aint never been to a trial run on horseback so my EB dog at 19.25 inches is just fine...

Ive never understood trials on horse back and dogs that just run fast and forward ????

nope, never been to an american trial but i have adopted there way of thinking and changed it a little to suit NZ, instead of a horse i use my quad

No , I have never been and hunted there lands -big -real big I imagine
