Smallfry, if you only want a dog to work a few short months of the year by all means. But I expect mine to hunt everything put in front of them. You small game hunters are a crackup

You are assuming I only hunt for a few short months a year. I never said I don't hunt fur, what I did say pointer and setter trials are run on birds, and fur on a pointer and setter are a problem.

Not sure about the morning trial on Saturday, but Robyn was 1st and 2nd on the afternoon trial with a strong display from her young pup. No Challenge point awarded though.

So with no challenge point awarded was Robyns dogs placed 2nd & 3rd. For members who are wondering what the fuck im on about as it does become confusing, in some trials the best dog on the day has not always been given first place but placed 2nd (no first place given) if that dog was not up to championship level or not worthy of gaining a championship point.

The dogs were placed 1st and 2nd respectively. Just no Challenge point as the 1st place wasn't up to that standard. Watching the run, I'd say it was a fair call by the judges.

Lets hope this continues as I hav never understood the reason why 1st was withheld sometimes and dogs being placed 2nd & 3rd.

hard Judging is a must ! It would be futile awarding a point just because a dog comes first even if it has got through its run its manners may not have been good enough around a trap for example -my dog walked at least five feet when the bird flew -no way he should get a point if he does that even if he finished ...... which he didnt lol

Dont have to give a challenge point for every first place given

Looking forward to catching up with everyone for the HBGDC 50th anniversary trial next weekend...hope the weather is good and the dogs do well.

HBGDC 50th anniversary trial as held yesterday a small way out of the centre of the Napier town ship. Conditions leading up to the trial haven been the best by the looks of the water that lay as ponds over different parts of the ground ,The wind also was something else as it was fair blowing and made me wonder how difficult it would be scenting for the dogs as it whipped briskly through the course .
The whole crew met outside one fo the local drinking establishments at 8.30 where we met with Local club member and Epagneul Breton enthusiast Tony who led us to the grounds which sided onto one of the local whitebaiting rivers of Napier .No one appeared to be having to much luck gathering the white gold and I think id rather pay for the pleasure of eating them myself .
Tony Connor and and one of my favorite judges Bob whitehead were doing the honors today of walking the field through its highs and lows and informing us of our good bad and uglys !Bob was also sporting his new LEATHER boots , a far cry from his normal plastic jobs and a bit more comfortable one might expect .

I must say it was a let down that only the Pointer and Setter club members were in attendance at this trial to run their dogs otherwise there would not have been a trial .
As the trial progressed I had a chat with Tony and Victoria about the bygone era where the handlers were around 40 people and the gallery even larger .What a sight it must have been before the advent of computer games ,TV and all the other modern gadgets that have drawn even country people away from what were once sound country entertainment .

I cannot describe each run but some memorable parts were seeing one of Dave's Irish Setters quartering the field beautifully and Francis's English Pointer going at speed with such grace ,I thought that dog must be put together perfectly to cover the ground so smoothly as it did .
Inti ran first against Robyns dog Tonto who was being as helpful as it could have to her endeavors and Inti took that one out .Fialte was up next against an impressive running Gordon owned by Grant detheridge-davies .Both dogs hit turbo and it was good to see although my bitch quartered behind a few times to go around the small lakes on the course and both sadly didn't pick the pidgon scent up and hence were lifted .
Dave and Robyn went up with two experienced dogs who went a little quick and forward and found out of sequence - both lifted and out.

Down to the final English Setter Inti versus Dave's Irish Setter Billie .I was a little nervous as Inti had recently started moving a little more than I like around the traps but one can only hope on the day they pull their heads n and do a good job .

Inti started with a bit of cautioning up ,he has done this many rimes and is just expecting a bird to be in the game near him or their had been some scent but after a few verbal nudges he got down to some serious finding work and produced both birds and a fetch to hand .Billie was sent to get the second bird Inti pointed so he could take second place .

All in all bloody good trail with good people and the added bonus of the Silver ware coming back to Auckland with me for a time .
