    Rosie Has it Rough

...at her new home. She is worn out from following eight quail from the yard to the lower field, lunging through 1" to 2" snowdrifts!

A lad and a dog the makings of some wonderful memories!

That's right rember how innocent they both looked right now ..... Because in a couple years time those two will be burning through your ammo , boots , socks and tucker!! Enjoy every second with the both of them!

"It's place"?. You believe a dog knows what a couch is, if it should be there or not? None of that stuff means anything to a dog bro, they learn their "role" by good interaction with the handler. Houses, couches, heaters are all just objects to a dog. Some of them really comfy objects!

its place will be freezing its arse of next to you in some god forsaken wet hole or bringing you birds from water that would shrink our testicles maybe even burrowing thru crap that would put a hedgehog off
i dont begrudge rosie a bit of early confort or coddling knowing what she may endure, gladly, in the future just to be with you..

I agree. My dogs know their place, and as long as I control "the place" it can be anywhere I want it to be. There's little value in trying to "toughen a dog up" they're all born tougher than us and doesn;t mean we shouldn;t show them some kindness here and there. Handling will control the end result, not if it's freezing its nuts off or not.

as someone who lost his hunting mate recently i now understand that i let him down by not having the control i should have.
but control is not cowering or standing over nor is it begrudging them a bit of comfort that they will well earn.
thier working lives will be hard enough and our job is to nurture thru training not dominate thru harshness or some sence of thinking we need to standover or ''treat im mean to keep im keen''to get our message thru.

You are absolutely right. My dogs are very compliant and a lot of that has to do with the trust they have in me. Bullying a dog might have got a command obeyed for some, but it will never build a team.

consistency[ the good kind] breeds trust respect equaling a great reliable dog which should end in a great team given you have the right goods to start with on both sides
. The biggest problem I had was other people trying to get her to do stuff she knew I wouldn't allow ......like scrounging food at social events , and that's where the consistency thing became hard
    \
id,a removed her from the temptation at least untill the offenders left

i delivered to a place in methven that used slug bait by the pallet load .
i noticed a elderly lab /lab cross hooking into the stuff panicked and hunted the cockie down.
he was so nonchalant i nearly clocked him '' he only eats enough to get dopey '' ''done it heaps and he aint dead yet''.
