Thanks everyone, we have decided on getting a lab, possibly lab X.
If anyone has pups in or not to far from the bay of plenty area let me know.
    Cheers

I'm yet to see a good lab deer dog, then again maybe all the lab owners I know are as lazy as their dogs 😉

Lab is a great choice! Get a pure one from a good working strain and you will never regret it. If you want some help, hook up with Hairy from Taupo on the other forum...his are great deer dogs.

The knockers have probably never owned one, or live in Australia.

While I cant recommend the parents of this litter as I don't know them, I can recommend the kennel, having seen a few labs they have bred. Here is a current ad for a litter of theirs:

    KEEPERSMOOR KENNELS

Sire: Rosewood Kentucky Sharpe Whelped 28/12/2016
    Dam: Keepersmoor Eden-rata

Id give the lab the thumbs up to about the only down side is that get fat pretty easly especially as they get older ,labx could be the go maybe with a collie they were my mainstay for years last litter of pups I sold last year had a little greyhound in them but you couldn't tell old fella that trains heading dogs around here grabbed , got it going he sold it for 4k ...I sold it to him for 50 bucks lol ...lab/collie pretty versatile

I agree with that. I've seen the bitch work on pheasants and she's a good one.

Dogs, any breed, only get fat if over fed.

    and under worked

You know, just looking at the pedigree of the Keepersmoor litter above, I just love seeing that "Riverbend" blood in there on both sides. That stuff is pure NZ/UK working blood, right back unto the FTCH flagstaff dogs from the 40s/50s. You wont find much more providence in a lab in NZ I understand Neville is still alive and kicking too...Of course this is all merely paper, go see the dogs in question

    I have a 6 month old pup, 5/8 GSP, 3/8 chocolate lab.

    Good with kids. yup
Good with other dogs and animals. yup
Won't need more than 1 walk a day. yeah... we will see. hes got a lot of energy
Good for tracking deer. he has the nose for it, have not tested him out though. his siblings have tracked deer
    Good around guns. yup
Small to medium size. nope, hes currently 23kg and still going. im expecting 32kg ish
    Trains easily. yup
Happy to chill out. hes 6 months old so not yet, but he will in time
Obedient and loyal. obedient is work in progress, definitely loyal

Hes a great pup, prettymuch everyone loves him. our other dog is a kelpie cross huntaway, shes scared of loud noises and has too much energy. She probably would be scared of a deer if she ever found one too. Shes a cool dog, but not a hunters dog at all.

Good with kids.... also train your children to respect the dog and if the children are small train them to keep away from dog unless you or Mum are there
Good with other dogs and animals...that is entirely up to the control you have
    Won't need more than 1 walk a day...one walk a day ... how far??!!
Good for tracking deer...every dog has a different mindset ... some are naturals, some are not...
Good around guns...do not think that using a .22 is a sweet little lolly for puppies to get used to gunfire ... better off buying a cap gun for starters ...
Small to medium size...there are many breeds which would fit that criteria
Trains easily...that is pretty much up to you...
Happy to chill out...dogs and humans have sat around the campfire for thousands of years...!!!
Obedient and loyal...that is pretty much up to you ...

I have spent a bit of time with the bitch and she is a lovely dog and lives for hunting. I own one of her grand daughters who is now 14 months old. My dog is shaping up to be very good. She is steady, I can get her to hunt close, she is very determined on blind retrieves and is able to mark multiple birds. I have hunted ducks, partridge and pheasants over her and she has done well. The good thing about Chris is that he is more than willing to provide assistance. He has taught me a lot about training and the success I am seeing is attributable to what I learnt from him. The dam to my bitch, which I think is Rata's daughter, is a very good deer dog.

Chris has recently sold his boarding kennels, but still has Keepersmoor kennels. The number above is for the boarding kennel. If you want his cell, send me a PM.
