Dont ask me why, I dont know what it is about them but I just don't like them. Having said that I'm house sitting for my boss at the moment and she has two - both of whom are lovely - but hasnt swayed me

This is what we're legally limited to in Vic for ducks and deer

You might be suprised if you saw a proper working one of which I doubt there are many in Aussie these days... but i respect your view... but there are some crackers around ...

Yeh I'd have to agreee with you there ruff, I've not seen or heard any evidence of great labs in Aus. I think in general because the hunting culture is so small here we don't have the caliber you guys do.

Interested to know, out of the list I provided through that link, what do you think realistically could make a good deer indicating dog? is it a matter of all of them with the right training or are some breeds really not going to be as good as others?
I'm starting to get the impression (I'm very slow sometimes) that most breeds can do it for you with proper training. The country I hunt in varies a lot in type, elevtion and vegetation density but the common thing is there are always heavy borderline impenetrable patches where the deer often are. I want something that can smell a deer when its in there and indicate "He's there boss". Obviously never expect it to be perfect but as I've always said if it gets me one big boy in its lifetime its paid for itself.

Just so I don't completely highjack this thread which I am sorry about, there is a bloke here I found last night and am trying to contact that uses brittany's for sambar - so thats another in the mix.

Honestly Bavarian most dogs will do the dead on deer. The lab's in NZ are getting very hit and miss. Namely out of the last few I've had there has only been one worth looking at and that old bugger died of cancer. But fuck he was good. The other several have ended up in the gut hole.

Yeh i was starting to think that. I guess it all depends on availability but I'm definitely thinking of leaning towards a brittany now to appease the missus, If not a shorthair. She'd hate on me the next 12 years if I got a wirehairas much as I know it'd be good
    Thanks for the advice guys.

Pip, who is starting to get her head around it. Took a little bit to get used to the gun and last night started to go out a bit with the rest of them.

Yeh I've got one myself, I can get a bit of weight on him at times but he's the same just cant hold it. My brother has a whippet/stag and hes a lot better that way very solid. "Sika" my whippet can still take a fox though. What do you put em on over there?
