    Fern. The new hunting dog.

Some of you may recall the litter myself and a couple of mates bred a few months back. Parents were GWP/Lab & GSP/Lab.

Well they all found homes quite easily and most of those are hunting homes too, which is neat. And quite a few of them went to mates, so we’ll get to see their progress as well.

This is our one, Fern. She’s 11 weeks old now and she’s a spitting image of her father.

She’s settled in well, still yapping a bit when she wants out of her kennel/run, but she is getting better each day. Just focusing on getting her out for a session and toilet break before she gets unsettled.

I am long line training her and going down the track of the deer dog blue print, but without going the whole hog. It’s a great tool to help get the basics right. I still want her to be a pet for the boys to grow up with. So supervised fun time is pretty important too.

At the moment I haven’t got the time to be full on training her, so my wife gets her out for a couple of sessions each day to help out. That’s working well. Once the days get longer and work slows down I’ll be into it. Currently some of my training sessions are in the dark with head lamp on! Haha.

Without pressuring her too much, we have recall and sitting on command pretty sorted now, which I am pleased about. She’s a smart pup.

I’ll try and keep this thread up to date, as I know some of you will like to watch her progress into a useful all round hunting dog (hopefully!).

We’ll focus mainly on deer, tahr and chamois indicating, but retrieving ducks will be up there too. And if she goes well, the odd quail trip may be on the cards.

    Cheers
    Josh
