Thread: Good dog for a first timer?

The missus and i are looking to get a dog in the next couple of months. I want something that i can take hunting and not be a pain in the ass, doesnt have to find me game just a companion that wont get in the way and do what i tell it, fetch the odd animal.
The missus just wants something cute haha.

I like the look of collie x labs, both being smart dogs, the missus like pure bred collies, i do as well just not sure how one would go with guns? Pure bred labs seem to get a bad rep because of the breeding in NZ?

Any advice would be great. Cheers

The question is what type of hunting do you do?

Don't choose a dog by its looks and cuteness, that hopefully won't get in the way while hunting... might aswell not get one at all...
Choose one that suits the type of hunting you do and the eviroment you leave it.... which means don't buy a 300m ranging english pointer or setter when you live in central Auckland...

If I were to get a dog that is chilled out and quiet and cuddly. I'd go with a vizsla, the softer of the Versailles... That was my plan C when I was looking for a dog anyway...
but thats just me....

Main hunting i do is just rabbits wallabies ect, so mainly on high country stations/farms. With the odd bit of deer stalking over the west coast when i get a chance. We are moving to a dairy farm (canterbury) in the next month hence the idea of being able to get a dog.
I like the idea of a visla but have herd they can be a lot of work? Mind you every dog is going to be a lot of work!

if you've got chukar close by to you, I'd be diving in to get an english pointer or the setters... and hunt chukar from dawn till dask

Have considered a foxy as well. What are gsps like for a newbie? I will point out i am prepaired to put in the hard yards to train it, but being my first dog im hoping to get one that will have a natrual drive to hunt and gather if you know what i mean?

Pointers can sit around as long as they get a good run off lead every day

The missus will be home most days so it will get a good chance to run around. My biggest concern is that when hunting it wont get excited and start barking, but i guess that would come down to training

By an "off lead" run in our case its 7k per night for us while dogs have free run ( i would imagine they easily do double this or more). Running round the yard just doesn't do it.

You will just end up with a demo zone at your place.

Whatever breed you decide on,

Pay the money for a well bred dog from proven working stock and at least you will be off to a good start.

Cool, cheers for the advice. Exercise shouldnt be a problem we are both active running biking ect, and there is a river, beach and lake close to where we are moving
