I listened to a fairly detailed RNZ report on this and it wasn't quite as I'd thought. Seems the individual dog people weren't the problem, it was the structure of the racing, which produces (supposedly) large numbers of injuries on the first turn . . . The racing board didn't address this to the extent the powers that be required, hence the shutdown. As a long term (life member) rodeo guy I have been following this and there are certainly lessons to be learned besides just ignoring numpty "antis".

dont look to close at horse racing then ive seen shit that would curl your hair.
theres cruel c..ts in every walk of life and generally everyone has to carry the can for thier bullshit.
as usual this will have a higher death rate for greyhounds inially as they require more excersise than most are willing to give and end up at the''vets''

There was some pretty torrid stuff in aussie a few years back.
Inhumane euthanasia of dogs, knocking 9 out of 10 pups in the head, pits full of 50 or 60 dead dogs etc

the thing is it is not just the dogs who get injured. If you are a slow greyhound you are a dead greyhound. They came up with the greyhounds as pets nonsense a few years ago, so they could say they were doing something for the ones who were no good for racing etc... Anyone who knows the numbers know that more than 6.000 were put down per year a while ago so it was just a token effort for PR. Since whinny loves horse racing I think they are safe. My best guess is the hunt clubs will be next for an examination. Shit I could tell some stories about them ( but wont). Lets just say the hunt dogs used to have an even worse time of it than greyhounds.

greyhounds are pretty good "couch potato" dogs, unfortunately lots are very prey driven

    Mate had a retired greyhound.
Nice enough dog and got on well with the other pets but it gave them a couple moments to think about and then tried to take chunk out of his missus.
Back to the outfit they got it from

I met another whippet owner a while back. She used to have a whippet with 3 legs. It was at full speed and hit a tree. Bye bye leg. Whippets can run 55kph. Greyhounds can do 70 and weigh triple. That's a lot of potential damage

A small dog can take a chunk out of a face or any body part. Dogs which have been well brought up and socialised do not behave like this. I have had dogs for over 60 years.

A lot of racing greyhounds haven't been socialized at all by some accounts
