Two dogs out of how many thousands that die each year due to puppy farms in the town that I am so truely from?

I'm not talking chop off the balls off every dog. I'm saying Mr and Mrs Benefit who live next door should really think about the opportunity of free spey and neuter days run by shelters - instead of letting Bruno run loose and bump up the numbers of homeless puppies who face euthanasia because someone "wouldn't cut my son's balls off, so why would I do it to my dog".

(Because if you son f*cks a bitch and gets her knocked up with the twins, the government will pay for their welfare and ensure they have a basic level of life. Your dog's bitch's twins will be killed.

The people that let that happen also are the same ones that shouldn't even have dogs. They also won't get them cut.

I wouldn't touch a pound or RSPA dog. I think I was adopted, and I've turned out a right mess.

Ha Ha good call mate I will concider that. Should be ok if they are not too old?? What age should I be aiming for to have a good chance of training for deer?

Had it suggested a number of times that I neuter my current lab ,well I held off from that until I saw how he worked out. Now very glade I did simply because I would like to breed from him later.Things in his field work I want to continue the blood line but this isn't some mongrel cross bred with several pedigrees.
Don't think that makes me a bad dog owner / back yard breeder does it? I do hold a "VOL" cert as a responsible dog owner.

Not at all Chris, Keep him intact if you think that scotum of his has a use in the future. Dogs don't just get knocked up. Poorly managed dogs get knocked up.

Dougie I think its an interesting statement you make, and for the best part, true. Vets suggest speying and neutering as par for the course and for the best part, it's a good idea for most of the things they see in thier clinics. Keeps everyone in business (including themselves) and shelter animal numbers down too. However, suggesting it's "Mr. and Mrs. Benefit" is strange. I used to live next to a weathy elderly neighbour, whose unkempt, mange-ridden Corgi (yes yeally) sired half the towns unexplained litters! Eventually he was forced to be fixed after dog control caught up with her!

I think the real problem is management. I know I would rather put a dog down the hole myself than make an unwanted dog someone elses problem by giving it to a shelter. If more people thought about that, perhaps they would adjust their way of seeing speying, or even dog ownership on the whole? If they aren't prepared to find a solution to their dog, then perhaps they should think about if they are prepared to own one at all?

The reason I agree with you suggesting Gibo look in the pound for a pup is simple. One, deer work isn't very complex, find a pup with the right temperament (read slow, biddable) and your probably half way there. Two, he has stated he can't justify a HPR breed like Chris suggested as the job description for this dog is a very short list. Thirdly, it sounds like it will be a family pet first and foremost, which I'm sure you will find in the pound Good luck Gibo, make sure you post pics!

Great advice all. I will look to the SPCA first but if anyone has something available let me know. Im in no great hurry so i have a good chance of finding a good dog.
Thanks again and pics will go up when we find the right dog.

Ps i agree its owners as a whole that meed to be accountable for management not a select genre

The reason I suggested Wire-Hair pointer was that I hunted with a guy a few years ago that had one. Was 3 months old & its 1st trip on the deer in the Kaweka's.His mate had a 5yr old GSP on the trip as well. The Wire hair was pointing every bit as well as the GSP ,its owner wasn't reading the pup (initially ) Few days into the trip that changed ,it was doing it naturally & was part of its genetic make-up.

I have a lab that probably has the desired attributes but finding another like him may take a while.Probably not a pure bred lad that I thought I was buying but more likely a bit of GSP or similar in his blood line. Not that its a bad thing ,in fact I'm quite happy about it really.

In short - love your words, Pointer. I made an unfair assumption (Mr and Mrs Benefit, hey I was on the benefit myself until very recently!) and it is true that the management is the problemo.

Gibo good luck with your search, pretty fun hey

Dougie I get it every time I take a dog to the vets - "when are you going to neuter your dog, we can book a time?"

My standard reply is, "you cut him, I cut you"

Pedigree dogs are expensive to buy - think of it as 400-500 bucks a testicle!
