    Kaimai access with dogs

    Hi,

Thinking of heading in to the Kaimai Mamaku for a wander with the dog(s) (have the relevant hunting and dog kiwi avoidance permits) just wondering even though the road ends and track signs say no dogs can I walk up the tracks to access the park? Question for DOC I suppose.

Looking around Eastern side (hot springs rd)

Have you emailed The Tauranga Doc office? They will issue you with a permit for your dog once they have sited a copy of your Hunting and Kiwi avoidance permits

    Hey Mate,

I did have a dog permit from Tauranga office a couple of years back, they have just expired and I have a new (kiwi avoidance trained) dog to add on to permits. I get a new one issued this week. I dont normally head that way but keen to go for a wander and check the views out from the NS track and take the dogs for a sniff.

    Cheers FBD

Dog permits are only issued for hunting purposes in the Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park.

To ensure we can complete the permit for you, could you please provide the following.

Please allow a few days to turn around time.

    Full name

    Address

    Phone number

    Hunting permit number

For each dog we need the following:

    Name

    Sex

    Breed – colour/tattoos

    Microchip no.

    Copy of kiwi aversion certificate

No kiwi cert required north of S Highway 29

    cheers NRF

If you have a permit then you have permission to have a dog in there so ignore the signs well that's my take on it.

Unless your going through farm land then of course get farmers permission.

Thanks NRF, I will apply via the Whakatane Office and get them to add in Kaimais on the Hunting dog permit, as thats what they did last time.

Both dogs are hunting dogs in training and avian avoidance trained/re-trained, the dog training never bloody stops..

Thanks Bobba, just what I wanted to know, yeah I always try and get farmers contacts and call first. Dogs have been wormed regularly and ones good with sheep the others learning.

    Cheers FBD

Suggest follow what Mike has said above to the new email address and obtain a written permit for the Kaimai dog hunting permit which is separate to your Doc hunting permit. The signage on one major entry point now states a $800 fine for not doing so. Noticed this across the Kaimai with "no dogs allowed" but you look into it and it's unless you have Doc Kaimai dog hunting permit. Unless it's across farmland like Te Tuhi (then you'd need permission from the farmer). I've been stopped by Mike on trail and presented my hunting permit, the Kaimai dog hunting permit (which is valid for 1 year) and Kiwi Aversion. The Kiwi Aversion is referenced in the Kaimai dog hunting permit by the way so is required. TBH I don't quite understand why this additional paperwork is required for the Kaimai. There has to be a reason. Surely the Aversion is sufficient given the outcome is protection of bird life?

Was just renewing my permit and I couldn't see the Kaimais as an option to include on the permit. Anyone else got this problem? Or is it my crappy old phone giving me the trouble
