Last trip my pup slept on my pack with fleece pikau
I'm thinking that a foam closed cell pad and polar fleece on it will be the way to go.
Size it to roll up and fit inside one side of her saddle bags with a few 1 liter drink bottles in the middle or some dog biscuits.
When we fly camp in the summer she doesn't need anything to sleep on.
But she carries most of our gear with the cuban fiber tarp, water, my sleeping mat, her drinking bowl and food.
Leaves me free to carry out all the meat
But in the winter for long periods of time I want her to have her own space and not steal any of my cloths as a bed
We might end up spending a few days at a time tent bound when the weather is crap
Last Sunday it poured all night and we were very cozy and warm and dry
Complete Kifaru tipi 6 man and pole and pegs 4 kg
Complete Winnerwell fast fold titanium wood stove 2 kg
Shared between a couple of guys and a dog this is relatively light luxury accommodation
Also intended to be for fly in tahr trips with a few bags of fire wood in the load
@7mmwsm that is an option of course
But having had to do that myself a few times, I would prefer not to subject my dog to it repeatedly
Really I consider a good hunting dog to be a valuable hunting tool and should therefore be looked after just like a rifle or binoculars etc
Ok I will look at the saddle bag and see what polar fleece the cook has here to sew something up out of.
I would want it to be made into one piece because otherwise its likely to migrate all over the place and I don't want her to be getting to near the tipi stove
My grandfather reputedly had a spaniel who was trained to open the end of a sack with its mouth and climb inside to keep warm when they were out in the mai mai
I used to just put my jacket down for her to sleep on. That was until a tops trip where a wet night saw the ground soak up water and drench my jacket. I now carry a small square piece of thermal matt that I have cut to size for her to sleep on along with her polar fleece coat I have for her at night time.
My first dog use to sleep on my swanni, woke up one morning to find he had enlarged the lace-up neck for me. I took a bit of canvas from a horse cover on the weekend for my dog. Not a lot of insulation but stopped the damp from the ground.

MK 1 being made by the cook now
600 x 400mm to fit perfectly in the saddle bag rolled up
Light parker material on the bottom
Closed foam mat
Polar fleece bright orange top
Josie will give it a test drive and we will see how it goes.
She is a big girl and will hang over the edges unless its cold and she will tuck up then
Mk1
Done
She will fit when cold but is not the most photogenic
Beds ! , at best mine could sleep ontop of my sleeping bag , failing that the lot of them would dig there own nest , they get really good at it ,sometimes even stopping for a brew they dig a wee hole & have a snooze , even on the chain here they prefer to dig .

Going out this weekend and will let little dog tuck in with us. Last time we took the dogs out we let them nest in the long grass, the cold ground ended up stuffing our old boy, his joint were obviously on their way out anyway. Retired him when we got home after that.
You can buy a good quality wool lined canvas dog rug from a saddlery, doesn’t take up much room in the pack.
