Yep. As explained to me by the local kaumatua it was a cheeky term for a young ace, stick boy or son of the stick. The pa site at the end of my road is Otamarakau

@EeeBees turns out you are also correct. Further inland in the eastern BOP where the old dialect is still spoken it becomes 'sons of the trees' apparently
