Always hard to say goodby to an old friend. Sometimes life is no longer "life" and dead comes as a relief.
Thanks for the kind thoughts guys. Neckshot, it was sad because he was such a big part of our family life. The big lug used to follow my wife everywhere and she was so cut up she asked me to take her out in the dark last night to where he lays so that she could just sit with him a while.

Rushy - your last comment had me choke momentarily. I thought back to our German Shepherd who we had to put down. A shit of a time. The whole family bawled their eyes out, should I say it, more than when a close family member died. Maybe with humans we try to keep the stiff upper lip but it doesn't work with pets. I can still visualize our girl looking up at me with those gooey eyes that day we took her to the vet for the last time. I think also, as you have pointed out, when they have been a big part of your family life over a long period, the loss also references memories (good and bad) of your own life passing. (Morbid shit I know.) Unfortunately we never replaced our girl.

If I swivel round in my chair I can see a box on the top book shelf. It has the ashes of her old rottweiler that passed away a couple of years ago. I'm glad she didn't ask me to bury him, he was a big bugger and the hole would have been huge.
Condolences on losing a friend Rushy.

Sad news Rushy, been there a time or two, never gets any easier.

Thanks guys. Just come home and there was no barking, no dog bounding toward me, no wagging tale. I am sure that we will come to miss that.
