Thats a shame Ruff but I totally understand where you are coming from.

In saying that, my pup is almost 5 months old. He has told me he has nightmares about where his dew claws and tail have gone.

I plan to council him by way of letting him enjoy what he was bred for.
If he still has a problem after hunting birds and everything else he is capable of, he can retire to his favorite spot on the old couch and still have a life where he is Lord Muck

I'm indifferent to it, it's banned here and I couldn't care less. I guess I can see the traditional aspect but that's all it is in my view. I know lots of people with gun dogs and no one has ever and I do mean no one, has ever complained of tail injuries.

That is except for my whippet who had half his tail bitten off by a fox but given the amount of docked whippets getting around I don't think it's a valid argument for pro docking! Haha

For one thing, BH, whippets are not a historically docked breed ...

The thing is, nobody cares if you don't breed another dog. It's a noble gesture but soon forgotten, and someone else will fill the gap. As said above, it's short sighted to give up. History has proven that laws come and go. But once good genetics are lost, they are gone forever. Chin up and soldier on ladies and gents.

I think you missed the point. It's not a gesture or a protest. I will not breed an animal to suffer in existence due to the reason i bred it.

I think you missed my point - you dont have a case until there are tons of dogs out there with tail damage. Trying to get the point across before they banned it hasn't worked. Now you have to show them the results of their decision. I doubt we are going to see this damage in the HPRs due to thier work style but if there ever was a case for docking it is the working spaniel.

No I got your point, what you missed is me not breeding is not trying to make a point. I won;t produce dogs i know are going to get hurt and most especially won;t do it to make a point. As you correctly point out, [plenty will, so not my problem.

And I would be utterly loathe to breed a litter of puppies just to add to some damage stats ...

I cannot fathom the rationale of those who quote that there are no statistics on how docking affects adult dogs (ahem ... go figure) ... the oldest Epagneul Breton I know of was over 17 years of age ... I asked of his owner about this ... he laughed out loud (conversation on Skype) and changed the subject to his latest sea trout fishing expedition ...
