Range...its a confidence thing in puppies, isnt it...seeing the conditions you were working in on the video it would be a big step for a youngster on his first recce and with vermin goats so close, crickey...go Turk!!!

Sorry, Kawhia, I was meaning that with experience they modify their range for the particular terrain they are hunting on. This is why I can never understand people when they say that such and such a breed has a specific range...if they have the prey drive and intelligence there is no specific range.

    yes and no.
a more defined gearbox is the hpr's strenght and weakness compared to the english breeds, sadly too many versatiles have a few gears missing.
everyone has a different idea on working distance and speed, but yeah it is always better to have a pup to pull in rather than try to push out.

Kawhia, nothing wrong with his range for his age, he can turn it on. The problem is his owners perception of range

This was his first day in forest, or any sort of cover. I have really encouraged his running from day one, so it was just nice to see he can drop back into heel if needed. He has only been a leash once in his life, at the vets.
That said, being his first hunt, I picked the terrain, nice easy going country with plenty of game, and also gave him regular spells from heeling, as you know it gets draining on a pup. The whole hunt was only an hour long also. Small steps

My only real criticism of him is his range, but considering he shares kennels with some hard running dogs maybe its just me
Was he bred here? I have heard very little about them here.

He was, out of imports. You won't hear much about them, there must less than 30 in the country. I doubt they will take off, I feel they simply don't feel they fill a niche, with some top notch GWPs and Cesky fouseks available. However, I feel the Wirehaired Vizsla available here is of better working stock than the smooth haired stuff available, it is closer to european work tested lines, as opposed to Shorthaired Vizsla stuff in NZ being largely UK and Aussie show based, Hence giving one a go.

Thanks very appreciated. At the end of the day though, you guys have to do the work.
