Viszla/GSP cross with a hint (1/8th) of lab. Had a GSP prior. Will only ever operate one of these breeds, just love them to bits. Get a dog breed you like and train them. Each breed has good traits and work ons. Pointers are bred to circle, flush, and indicate deer and birds. Yes, they do require training, like any dog, and are full of energy. So we suit each other well But, you get what you put in. They are the goods if handled well. They do have a single coat, so are suceptible to the cold, but I only notice this back at the hut or tent. Just bring a dog vest or puffer vest, pack extra food (a fatty brisket bone) for them... job done. Photo below is central north island, middle of winter... the only complaints that morning were "can we go hunt now"...

Maybe get the poodle from down the road to jump into bitches box with heading bitch lol. My last heading dog was one of two from litter of eight that were much stickier than the others,he was solid and not as fast as his mum but worked very well and accounted for a heck of a lot of pigs too. Should have made different life choices and brought him with me when I shifted south all those years ago... The line is now lost and was from grandfathers trial line. We live n learn.

To answer your question , a strong eyed heading bitch crossed with a Visla dog is what I use, that cross created this awesome indicating bitch, here she is indicating a Kareare native NZ falcon,
Also has a thick black coat so doesn't get or show she is cold
yes if one could get on of those lines rather than the show bred we have likely very different dog
Not deer but mine is real good on possums and goats (asI dont have deer local) hes a rottie huntaway cross and very smart. He knows day time is goats and night time is possums. He looks like a fine featured rottie, not big and boofy and just loves coming out...
If its just for deer, a straight heading dog is the simplest option.
Overkill is still dead.
This one looks to have some potential. Good price too !

If you have a garden and a library, you have all you need. Oh, and a dog, and a rifle
Well it's got four legs and a waggly thing on one end and a licky bitey sniffy thing on the other...

Heading dog or a first cross heading dog Vizsla.
Lab-heading dog, BUT start with a pup not something that previous owner wants to dump.
bloody dogs!
mine just cost me $200 at the vet as poor little tart got attacked by a boxer
