Thread: What dog breed ( or cross breed ) do you deer indicate with?

yeah lets see the Catahoula! where abouts did you get her? I do like the Catahoula as a dog breed but didnt think they would be any good for deer

My Bo is Cat x Heading also, been an awesome dog, super smart, quiet and nice to have around, hunts really well. Plenty of deer down.

He'll also retrieve ducks off a pond no worries and does good cadaver work on chamois and tahr

I actually got him through this forum, think the story was a friend of the forum member gave his son the go ahead to get A pup, then said son came home with two pups (Bo and his sister) so one had to go. His sister was a nice looking pup also but super full of beans but he was just quiet and chilled out so I chose him. Think they came from a guy down near dunedin that breeds cats for pigs and the litter was the result of a rogue working dog.

Have some friends in Mexico who have Catahoula's for keeping the wolves away at night, around their compound. Interesting since they're originally part wolf (yes I know all dogs once were...)
Loved the idea of having one in NZ since seeing them... Haven't heard of one used for deer, so nice to hear a cat x heading is a viable option.

Had GSP's but running a calm heading dog /gsp wire hair cross. Calm, quiet and easy going with good drive.
Deer, goats and pheasants, swims like a fish and sleeps out in the cold like a husky.
Some of the pointer, viz, spaniel cattle x look capable.

Ryan, I'm glad Bo is still going good, the fella sure has had a few scrapes so good to see he's still chugging along

I have a lab x gsp. I've enjoyed him but now the only dog id consider would be if I could put him over a heading bitch , or just a full heading dog.

His pros - smart, very good nose, loves water, has the calm nature of the labrador, great with kids, and indicates most game species well.
His cons - strong level of pointer drive that I always have to keep a lid on, hes big at 35 kg, has a tendency to pant if hunting and has a thinner coat than I would have liked.

I've known viszlas , wirehaired viszlas, wirehaired pointers, gsps and labs and most of them were absolute
shit but the two best dogs I've ever seen have been pure heading dogs.

Theres no reason why with proper training and discipline you cant get a good dog from any of those breeds but some just take more work when younger.

I would tread carefully with catahoula not all but some can be quite independant and a handfull to train and I know of the odd one that has not been a nice dog around children coming around - you will need to be experienced around dogs and training and recognize the early signs of over aggression early on -

Very interesting. Most people are saying Heading X or straight-heading dogs. I figured the Pointers would be preferred.

Heading x huntaway is my dog - 11 yrs old and getting a bit old for the hard hills now. Easy to train very biddable and an eay going dog to have around camp.

some of the pointers can be a thick as a plank the old red setter classic case-- the heading dogs in general are steady and intelligent border collie especially so

That's her, she's more heading dog then cat , was from a cullers litter and would've been a good bailer but trained her out of that, nows she's a ninja
