Agree..... had read a similar description of this incident previously, and like this one am left wondering about the detection of a 'weak' signal from a PLB? No earlier detections from the PLB despite them initiating a response very early in the piece, and the report notes that they were not able to draw any conclusions about how the victim ended up where he did. How/when did the beacon get activated?

Retiring after 32 years in Land Sar I can say some of the best friends I have made were and still are loyal and dependable members...but it is not for the faint-hearted... there were some times that were total elation having acheived a great result returning members back to their families, but sometimes losing people in difficult situations that you have no control over which especially applies to losing children and does take an emotional toll.....as hunters and outdoors men & women, campers and trampers we have a ready, totally competent well managed and skilful organisation. Thanks for the service mate. If it were not for volees throughout nz in several sectors, this country would be in a bigger mess than it is.

Now that I'm back in the Nelson area I'll be switching back to this SAR area

I was a member of SAR for a few years and volunteered my time on quite a number of operations.
I know the area like the back of my hand and am very fit with a high level of back country skills.
However I got 'sacked' as I didn't attend a 'track and clue course' which must be compulsory so that was the end of my SAR involvement.
Must say I was quite shocked to be fired from a volunteer organization but more time for hunting i guess

track n clue awareness....first aid and search techniques are the big three ticks you MUST have in order to be deployed...thats come from the top and police..its non negotiable unfortunately......sacked is interesting word to use as its not all that easy to take volunteer off the books...
the track n clue course is actually a LOT of fun and does help when finding that deer that dissapeared after the shot...
maybe consider getting back in touch and doing whats needed.Ive met a few of the Oamaru crew and they struck me as great folks to be around.

yes get into SAR if you can - I used to be heavily involved - the satisfaction of finding the missing party never goes away - the track and clue awareness if thats the same as what I did at the big Dip Flat police SAR course was a lot of fun and well worth it - about 50 police and 6 of us from DOC very very social

Track and clue awareness produces better results at SAR and hunting...
