    29 Point Stag Restoration

I recently had a crack at fixing up an old head for a friend, not sure where it got shot or who shot it. It's has a lot of points and palms across a small amount of spread.

The skull was quite fragile so i didn't boil it. A light water blast and several days in a warm dishwashing liquid bath, 12% peroxide pasted on the bone and a potassium permanganate dilution to stain the antlers. If i had more time i'd have liked to have spent more time yellowing the tips.

yes nice job well done I have done a number of these - a little piece of sand paper - very lightly sand tips - but that is a nice job and congrats to someone willing to take the time- and the way it was done yup that's the recipe - your method is exactly what I use -I have taken a green mouldy head from a mate and turned in into something he put on his wall - same method

    Looks bloody mint mate!
Do you have more detailed instructions on what you did? I have a few heads of mine I want to try tidy up.

Thanks for all your kind words everyone.

@Roarless20 this was my first go at this so theres definitely room to improve, my step by step below.

    1. The green on this head came off with a light water blast, being very careful as the old skull was loose in places.

    2. if the skull was in better condition i would've simmered it in a pot with clear dishwash liquid, a couple tablespoons worth. Instead I left it in a bucket of warm soapy water in the sun for several days, changing the water every day until it looked white enough dried in the sun.

    3. 12% peroxide hair stuff, similar to link below painted on skull and left in the sun. The peroxide can be mixed with baking soda to stick the skull better.

    4. Potassium permanganate, link below. 3/4 teaspoon to 1 cup of water mixed and painted on the antlers, be sure to cover the skull with tape and a bin bag to avoid staining the bone. The potassium will be purple when you paint it on, allow it to dry to decide on the darkness you're after (add more potassium for darker finish. I preferred not to stain the smooth parts of antler that had been rubbed white/yellow anyway and sanded with 120 grit to blend between white and brown.

    5. The step i missed. Dry brushing with a lighter potassium blend between the white and brown and more sanding would've had things looking better.
