Stinky tanned billy skin - any suggestion how to get rid of the smell?

Got a Billy over the Easter weekend, this one had beautiful fur so decided to keep it. Dropped off to a local guy to tan.

Skin came out beautifaully but the smell is just %^&%% awful , smells just as strong as the day we got him

wife will not allow that anywhere near the house so it hangs in the barn for now. - You can smell this from 5 meters away

Any idea what to do? will the smell fade over time? The guy who tanned it said he tried using eucalyptus oil but doesn't seem to do much.

Ozone generator, maybe worth a shot if you have one handy.

needs good wash first up - soak in nappysan for a few hours - hand wash in bath - use lux flakes - peg out with very fine nails on sheet ply - and let dry - my suspicion is the smell will be in the hair and not the skin

Thanks for the tip. the skin is all dry now , I take it shouldn’t damage / cause fur slip if I wash and dry again ?

no not if it has been tanned properly- drying will be the important bit - naturally not forced say in front of heater

What sort of tan did he use? Was it soaked in a acid bath?

Unleaded and then an alkaline detergent (laundry type). Normally do this before tanning.

I'm not sure you will ever get rid of that smell for good. It may be easier to go hunting again and take a nanny.

Sure so I guess that means pinned on a plyboard away from direct sunlight? Most likely just gonna leave in the barn

I tanned skins professionally for about 9 years and you need to get the stink out before tanning. I used Nilodor and added drops of it to the pre-washes, pickle, and tanning solution. I know in the US the taxidermy supply companies sell an agent specifically for ridding the smell from such skins etc. Cheers

Could be english as a second language...Only question it binary the first or another?

Looking at the posters other post I suspect more likely a phisherman than a hunter @dannyb ?
