Wanting to try bow hunting.. recurve looks like fun

    Hey all.

I'm looking to try bow hunting and some bow fishing but would like to have a go with a recurve I think. Here in Missouri it's pretty easy to have deer at 30 yards from a tree stand.

So how do I measure draw?
    What draw weight?
    What broadhead weight?
Can I bow fish with a recurve?

Start on a recurve to learn the fundamentals of archery would be my advice, probably around 28-30lb. Draw length is your armspan from tip to tip of middle finger in inches divided by 2.5. less of an issue for recurve but needs to be accurate and set up properly for a compound bow. Compound you're gonna want to look 50-60 lb draw weight. You can go higher easier than a recurve due to the cams letting the weight off at the back of the draw. 100 or 125 gn for the weights depending on your bow. There is a lot to it and you can't go wrong starting out at a club.

Not many clubs around but I appreciate the advice. Will 30lb be enough velocity at the other end on a deer?

I have shot a compound bow of a friend's a few hundred times. And it just doesn't do it for me

No, but it's about what you want to start on until you have your technique down. Holding 30lb back on the side of your face time after time wears you out pretty quickly and your form goes to shit as a result. 40 or 45lb is the minimum permitted for taking game here I think, but check local rules. Learning on say a 50lb recurve will be a big ask.

Yeah might have to borrow one. I don't know if I can shell the money for multiple bows...
