    West coast bowhunting

Hi everyone... After 3 years with covid, im finally able to visit your country again..
Im heading out to the west coast for a thar and chamois and plan to do a heli camp andnot staying in a hut..
In 2015 I was at x mas flat hut in karangarua... it seems DOC did a fair bit of culling there... Does anyone in here have a good suggestion for a place to go to get a thar or chamois with the bow.. I liked the Karangarua because it had some decent bush at the river..
I might go for a chamois after my fly in trip just by walking up whataroa or another system so I prefer a good thar area to fly in to but still with chamois ro be seen.. just to have the oppertunity.

I was beside that told that it is not possible to land anywhere else but at the huts at karangarua- is that thrue?

Really hope someone have a good place..

sorry about the spelling - im from Denmark

    cheers
    Frank

If you are going to fly in then I’m guessing it will be with James Scott, he will be able to tell you what the animal numbers are like.
I think you are correct in that he can only land by the huts in there? I’m sure there will still be tahr in there, the lower valley has deer too.

The Whataroa would be a good option for a Chamois, we saw some by the river flying out the last time a few years ago.

The Late Matt Winter did some great videos bow hunting that might interest you, a few were on the West Coast

unless its changed in the last years, you can only land at Christmas flat in the Karangarua, and Horace walker up the Douglas.

If the forecast is for easterlies than head west if the other way east is best.
